We have a Rinnai Avenger gas convection heater as they are really economic and heat really well, but I love the look of the 'log-fire' heaters too. I found a great website with a good selection of heaters to look at, it is www.thenaturalchoice.com.au there is some really nice looking ones towards the last few pages especially. I really hope you get your lovely home all toasty warm again soon!
:) FlickAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828021706958060839.post-33091777082220295792010-06-13T14:12:31.410+08:002010-06-13T14:12:31.410+08:00Good luck with the search. The units can get mighty hot even with a mesh grill or one like the Rinnai has. Make sure though that whatever unit you get, the mesh can be remnoved and that it still looks good without it! As Grace gets older you won't need that protection and you'll want the heater to look good. The mesh can block the view of the flames and the logs, making it look more like a fake fire than a real one.

I hope I've helped as I've been hunting for a darn heater for almost 5 months and have looked at so many brochures and units that I've just gone ga ga....and not in a good way

OK that's enough from me on this subject now...back to the demolition of part of our chimneyMelbourne Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00512877501524848674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828021706958060839.post-53641188849979810612010-06-13T05:44:22.828+08:002010-06-13T05:44:22.828+08:00Hope you manage to keep warm! I went to look at gas log fires today!

Rinnai are terrific! But having said that, the people who designed the latest ones (I think) have got rocks in their heads for some BAD but mostly UGLY design features.

If I were you I'd check out the Coonara, Chateau. It'll heat a large area and you don't need an existing fireplace.

The Heatmaster range and the ESCEA are also nice to look at and will heat efficiently....it all depends on personal taste really.

Good luck...now all I have to do is find one I LIKE TOO!

LesleyMelbourne Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00512877501524848674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828021706958060839.post-68098472924326726432010-06-11T12:43:10.481+08:002010-06-11T12:43:10.481+08:00Oh No...I am someone who really feels the cold and...Oh No...I am someone who really feels the cold and so I felt a chill just reading your post you poor thing.
Well...we live in a unit..and certainly did our research on what kind of heating we could get ..without having to permanently fix it to anything.
Those electric heaters honey really chew up electricity..we got rid of all of ours because last winter our bills were just shocking.
If you can afford to get another new gas heater..I would go with that..I heard that Rinnai are supposed to be pretty good.
I purchased an oil heater for Jacq's room and it warms it up a treat...they are great for small rooms..and affordable..so long as you keep the doors closed they do a good job.
For the unit...believe it or not...when I use the dryer it tends to warm up the place...and also...what I do is turn the gas oven on for a while and leave the oven door open...just like having a gas heater...but I make sure that the safety gate is always locked so Jacq cant get anywhere near it..but it does a good job of at least taking the chill out of the room. Have a look on ebay...there are loads of great gas heaters for sale...otherwise they are VERY expensive to buy..but on ebay you should be able to grab a really good one for around $300...which is still costly I know..but it will do a great job of warming up the place right through winter. xoAnna Whitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15849163903759164196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828021706958060839.post-7199519996730383732010-06-11T12:11:47.019+08:002010-06-11T12:11:47.019+08:00Hi Amanda, I think one of the log fire look type h...Hi Amanda, I think one of the log fire look type heaters would be lovely. I love the look of the log fire look heaters but I don't have any advice sorry. We have a Jetmaster gas "log fire look" heater and as much as it looks so realistic it doesn't heat our open plan living area as much as I'd like. Having said that it is quite old (maybe 10 - 12 years) and I would imagine newer models would do a better job. Last year we put in a reverse cycle split system which we mostly use but the log fire looks great when we entertain. Good luck in your search and I hope you are feeling snug again soon! Have a great weekend. xxChristinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01026393386504178764noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828021706958060839.post-31829547772095957032010-06-11T09:32:22.797+08:002010-06-11T09:32:22.797+08:00I wish I knew about this so I could suggest someth...I wish I knew about this so I could suggest something! Hmm, I do like the look of those gas ones with flames but you really need to check that they'll heat the area you require. We looked into them before we decided on the wood heater but they weren't going to heat a space big enough for us. I'm sure you can get ones that do though. I agree with you on the thermostat - they can be very pesky - turning off and on all the time!
ps thanks for your lovely comments about my macarons. You should definitely give them a go.
