"A portrait of my children, once a week every week in 2013"

Sophie:  We left home early on Sunday morning, meeting a group of friends and their children for a day by the river to watch the boats zipping past as part of the Avon Descent.  Driving down gravel roads through a misty haze of white fog, we settled on a camp site beside the rocky water's edge where we lit a fire, enjoyed a barbecue lunch and then found a spot to sit in the winter sunshine and watch the competitors zoom past.  Getting out in the fresh air and letting the little ones explore was lovely... making boats from leaves and twigs, using nets to 'fish' and skimming pebbles - all simple pleasures that beat television and toys any day.  Sophie loved the creek... splashing on the edge of the river in her gumboots Peppa Pig style and eventually ending up saturated from the waist down (luckily I'd packed a spare pair of shorts!!)

I'm finding it hard keeping up with this weekly photo project lately... the end of the week rolls around and I find myself disappointed as I scroll through my photos and discover half either out of focus or unsuitable.  With Grace at kindy two or three days each week, I like to spend the days she is at home enjoying her company as opposed to being behind the camera and out of the action.

I've contemplated not participating in this project on a weekly basis anymore.  However, I'm not one to just give up on something I've started and with only 21 weeks left until the end of the year, I feel I should persist.  I'm also conscious of not feeling as though photo taking is a burden though, and so this week, I've accepted that I am only able to share a photo of Sophie and that next week, to compensate, I will focus on just taking one shot of Grace that I'm happy with...

  1. What a little darling. I love a little bucket hat on a little girl.

I know what you mean about the project. To be honest, my kids are getting totally over me documenting their every move and it's not a particularly natural way for me to behave either. I'm not a day-to-day documenter at all (Instagram and I are not friends). That said, every time I think I'll just stop with the project, I only have to look back over the weeks that we've done already and I'm that pleased. I really love it.

  2. I got behind last week too...also, with three kiddos it all gets a bit much. sometimes I just post one pic of one child, I feel okay with that effort :)

  3. Amanda! What a beautiful photo! I have missed a couple of weeks too, and seem to always be late, but I don't think it matters, really. I think what I've enjoyed most is the conscious awareness of everyday moments, capturing them more regularly, and improving as the year progresses. Love to you x

  4. that photo of sophie is so precious...she looks so enthralled in whatever it was that she was looking at.

i too have sometimes looked over the week and felt disappointed. i think i'm more disappointed in myself that i've wanted to use this experience to get to know my camera better and take better photos, but that hasn't seemed to have happened.

and i find that my camera is so big that it's not light and easy to take out and about, so i have to take the majority of the shots at home. but all in all, i think we've done a terrific job to get this far! and at the end of the day all i'm hoping for is just one stunning photo from the year that i can look back on and say, "that's IT!"

  5. Oh I am the same. I had the best intentions, but I just found it so hard to keep up. I have NO idea how I stumbled across your blog Amanda, but I sure am glad I did :) xx

  6. Oooh I just want to squish her perfect little cheeks and give her a big hug. She's always so stinkin' cute.

I totally understand what you mean about the project. I have missed so many weeks, and at first it bothered me and I felt guilty, but then I realised that noone cared except me LOL, and I too didn't want it to become a burden, so I just do it when I can :)

My camera battery is in desperate need of being replaced, as it's only lasting for a few photos at a time. I miss having it on hand to snap away daily, and really should look at getting it fixed or replaced :)

  7. It sounds like you had such a lovely day out together. My Miss 9 is so similar to Sophie, she is always the one to wade a little further into the ocean than the rest of us inevitably getting wet:) This is such a sweet photo of Sophie too, with her blonde hair and pink hat:) I know how you feel about project not wanting to give up but finding it tricky to get photos in, it's hard getting one each week so I think one lovely one is a perfect compromise. xx

  8. I'm so glad you are persisting - you'll have such a beautiful collection of photos. And if it's just one a week, that's fine! I just love Sophie's searching look here xxx
