Hope you are all enjoying your Friday and are all set for the weekend. Tomorrow, we are going hunting for a new inbuilt gas heater. It’s been really chilly here at night and early in the mornings and I am desperate to get our new heater sorted out ASAP before winter really sets in!
Recently, I’ve been on the hunt for a nice winter throw for our living room couches. I’m picturing something in a chunky, knitted style that is cosy and warm to curl up under at night. I’ve seen some lovely ones at Country Road but I’m not sure I want to spend that much. If I could knit, I’d give making one a go myself.
I was reading something the other day that talked about how in countries where the shift in seasons is more pronounced, people make quite significant changes to their interiors to reflect this. Aside from the obvious cranking up of the heater or lighting of a wood fire, do you have anything you specifically do or change in your home when the cooler winter weather arrives?

Funnily enough, yes! The knitted throw rug does appear on our couch. I love the Country Road ones, but we can't get them here. Mine are Kas and Linen House ones, and they're both lovely and warm. You can sometimes pick up cheap ones at Deals Direct - you have to keep an eye out for the nice stuff though :)

Thanks for the tip Abby - will check out Deals Direct tonight x
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely getting a little chilly up here in Brisbane too. In our house I get out all the fluffy throws and put them on the outdoor lounge and in different rooms indoors, including the end of the bed. Stay warm and have a great weekend. Michelle
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda , I always change the colour of my accessories and add a cosy throw etc. I use lamps more to encourage cosiness:) I saw the throws at country road and also the matching cushion, they were lovely but I agree a tad exy!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, I guess the shift is not as dramatic here in Australia but one thing I do get out is the electric blanket. I really can't stand being cold and when hubby is away it keeps me warm. Love the shots you have posted. Good luck with the hunt tomorrow. I am still waiting for the installation guy to come and tell us if we can have a free standing firebox in the rumpus room downstairs. Luckily we also have a reverse cycle upstairs which is what I am sitting in front of right now with my cuppa, reading all the blogs. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with you heater shopping tomorrow Amanda. I do all the usual swapping the doonas, and sheets for warmer winter ones, the throw rugs come out and because we have a wood fire my decorating changes a bit and I incorporate pine cones as we use them to get the fire started. I also have less fresh flowers inside as we don't get many from the garden throughout winter. MD xx
ReplyDeleteSadly, the weather in the southern US is just plain hot for most of the year, so I don't do much to change up the decor. I'm so jealous that you're entering winter. It's so hot here right now that I love visiting you Aussie girls' blogs to see your cozy pictures
ReplyDeleteWhen winter arrives on the other side of the pond (Canada), we swap out all the white slipcovers in the family room for red cordoroy ones. Makes the room warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can find a heater, but that kind of shopping isn't always too fun. I hope you find one at a great price quickly! It's so easy to forget that others are experiencing very cool weather when it is so hot here in the US. Oh, how the grass is greener on the other side.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
The room truly is awesome! Must look at the pretty photo a little longer...
ReplyDeleteWarm Winter Wishes, Amanda. Have a happy happy weekend. xx
I don't really change things much seasonally even though it's getting very cold here in Canberra.I've just started to crochet a rug...should be ready for 2012!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the heater shopping - I will be looking forward to seeing the end result! I now a lot of people change their decor with the seasons but I don't. We did think about swapping the lounge and dining around for summer but it never happened.
ReplyDeleteFor throws I admit I love my Laura Ashley mohair number, but yes, I've seen some great ones at CR as well. Have a lovely weekend AManda! x
Hope your heater shopping was a success Amanda. In our part of Oz the seasons are quite dramatic and in winter we can get down to minus 12 degrees C, so although we have the fire, heaters, electric blankets, hot water bottles...I also hang all our scarves in the entry hall and we have lots of throws (I found the most gorgeous knitted ones in a local supermarket really cheap...bizarre, but I am not complaining!). And of course we have baskets of knitting everywhere too:) Oh and Olivia wants me to say that we toast marshmallows in the fire:) Hope that you have a wonderful weekend sweetie. ~ Tina xx
ReplyDeleteNo i dont actually! I like to dream of summer and warmth all year round - delusional i know! Have a lovely weekend! x
ReplyDeleteGood luck heater shopping over the weekend, I get out all of my throw rugs and put on the flanelette sheets in winter and wear thick house socks to keep my feet warm. I was recently at a DFO outlet and Laura Ashley had the most amazing throws in a range of patterns for $25 they were gorgeous. May just go back and get one myself. hope you have a DFO near you so you can go and have a look.

I hope you had success with the heater shopping today, it's been cold. I love winter so I can wear my jeans but getting out of bed to a cold house isn't fun. Hopefully things will warm up in your house soon.xo
ReplyDeleteHow did the heater shopping go?? My fabulous gas heater (only purchased last winter) packed it in Thursday evening. How convenient it was the second coldest winter night on record!! The reverse-cycle saved me thankgoodness and it will have to do until the service guy comes.
ReplyDeleteI have various "creature comforts" for the winter months. In regards to decorating though, I always make a few changes. I change cushion covers in the lounge adorned with a throw or 2, use a different table runner with warmer colours and have a winter quilt cover with a throw in my bedroom and there's some scarves hanging over the door. I have candles everywhere and the colours of these often change to reflect the season also. Last year I purchased one of those electric throws which is amazing!
Hope you guys aren't suffering too much in this chilly weather.
I hope you had a great weekend Amanda. Did you find a throw? I recently got a grey one (there's a pic on my blog) I love it, it's by d/lux and I managed to get it for 50% off. But I saw a gorgeous cable knitted cream one in Laura Ashley last week that I think you would love : )
ReplyDeleteI don't have many things I do in the colder months except add lots of blankets to the bed and over heat us at night with the heater, electric blanket etc. I've been thinking of getting a throw rug though. Let us know what/if you find something! I hope your heater shopping went well, can't wait to hear how it went!

Brrrr, it's so chilly in Sydney at the moment, a really icy snap came in yesterday. Am glued to my hot water bottle and heater at the moment. Seriously cannot wait until summer!!
ReplyDeleteI suppose more throws and blankets come out in our home when it's cold in addition to cosier colours!
