New Kitchen Touches

I was flicking through some photos I’d taken recently with our new camera and realised I hadn’t yet shared a few small additions to our kitchen. Back in February when I posted some kitchen snaps as part of my Homely One House Tour, things were looking rather bare. Our kitchen is relatively new following a big renovation (see here for before and after shots) and I had mentioned it was lacking those finishing off touches that add warmth and character to a room. I am slowly making progress in this area.

One of the additions we’ve made is a little shelf above our bench. I wanted a ‘tea and coffee making station’ close to the kettle as walking back and forth from the pantry wasn’t practical, especially with me who enjoys several cuppas each day. After searching and searching, I eventually found the perfect canisters to put on top of the floating Ikea shelf I had Paul install. Not only does this make things more easily accessible, it adds something to the previously bare wall.

Also, I have found a better ‘home’ for my recipe books and folders which were previously hidden down the bottom of one of the kitchen cupboards making them very difficult to use. With some inspiration from Nicole’s kitchen, I now have them positioned neatly above the fridge. My recipe folders (which I talked about in a previous post) are separated into two Kikki K magazine holders (one for savoury things like meat and pasta and one for sweet things like cakes and desserts). Any ‘not so attractive’ books are kept in the third holder. Inspired by a post on Nina’s blog, I made some ‘Dymo’ looking labels using a free font found online.

There are still several bits and pieces needed to finish off our kitchen but I’m liking the way things are headed and now have a clearer picture in mind of the look I’m aiming for.

  1. Hi Amanda, I'm the same as you, my pantry is a few metres away from my kettle so I have decided that tea/coffee things need to live close by. The little blue and white china piece on your shelf looks very pretty, is it a dish or a sugar bowl?
One of these days I might get myself a little more organised in the kitchen :)
    Hope you are well :)

  2. Hi Sarah, the blue and white piece is actually a cute little tin that used to hold these Dutch waffle type biscuits. My Nanna gave me the tin after I remarked how much I liked it. It has a picture of each of the four seasons around its side.

  9. Jeeps, I am so out of the loop, had no idea about Grace til tonight, but glad to hear she is on the mend! My life is spiralling out of control, I'm lucky to catch up on blogs once a week! I have that lack shelf too, though it near-on ended our marriage putting it up. I had another and hubby made me take it back and promise never to buy one again!! Hope you enjoy the rest of your week xo Nicole

  13. Love the shelf Amanda and especially the print. Very cute! It takes a while to do all the finishing touches doesn't it? We've been in our place nearly 4 years and are getting there! Should have everything complete over our Christmas/New Year break. Hope Grace is recovering well and is back to her usual self soon. xo

  17. The little shelf looks so great Amanda, so good not to have everything cluttering up the bench too. Love the cannisters! Your cook books look so neat too, mine are all stacked in a pile on the floor which isn't good, I've commissioned my brother to make a little shelf for me. The kiki.k folders work so well.

  18. The little lack shelf has really added so much to that space both visually and practically! And I like where you've put your cooking books and folders Amanda! It's nice to have your tea making things all in one space, that's about the only nice thing I can say about my kitchen's design is that I have a little tea and coffee cupboard... I don't have a pantry but I've got a tea and coffee cupboard :)
Have a great day my dearest!

  19. Love this idea Amanda. We have two very messy kitchen shelves where tea and coffee jars keep moving. Clearly we need a 'station' just for them :)

  24. This looks lovely Amanda. I have been trying to think of what to do with all my random recipe mags that look so messy sitting in a drawer in the kitchen. You have inspired me to get it all organised. I'm off to Kikki K today. Hope you and little Grace are well x
