Planning Sophie's 1st Birthday Party

It's hard to believe, but in only six weeks time, our baby girl will be turning one, so over the past few weeks, I've been trying to plan and pull together ideas for her upcoming birthday celebration. We'll be doing something similar for Sophie to what we did when Grace turned one - a simple morning tea in our backyard and being in the middle of spring, I've used the sweet dress I bought back in April as driving my inspiration and decided to go with a picnic theme. Having seen both Nicole and Louise throw parties with a similar theme in the past, I'm looking forward to putting my own spin on all of the wonderful ideas I've come across so far.

At the moment my vision is for blue and white gingham, jars and jugs of white daisies, baskets and perhaps some bunting along with comfy picnic blankets and cushions placed under the shady area of our backyard for the little ones to play on.  I have lots of ideas floating around in my head and am eager to start making decorations and getting myself organized, especially as I'm thinking of hosting another Pink Ribbon Day fundraiser this year which also happens to fall in the month of October.

Do you have any suggestions for a picnic party?  Any ideas for a cake to suit this theme?

  1. Oh my I can't believe that Sophie will be turning one in just six weeks, a whole year has passed by so quickly. I love the idea of a picnic party and Spring is a beautiful time of year to be outside sitting under the tree. I bought some paper lanterns to hang in the tree for Miss 13's party and made some paper bunting using doilies which looked pretty outside. Maybe the cake could have flowers on it too, either made with marshmallow or go with the daisy theme and place some on the cake too. Enjoy the birthday planning. xxx

  2. Oh Amanda that sounds gorgeous! I once had a picnic for my birthday and my girlfriend made the most beautiful cake.It was a simple square with green coconut on top to look like grass. She used Flake's as logs, and sat little people made from sugar on them. She surrounded them with little sugar flowers and a couple of trees. So cute! x

  4. No way, Sophie can't nearly be one already. That time has flown. What fun to plan her party. I hope you will do lots of pretty old fashioned treats.

  5. A lemon cake with marshmallow flowers and smartie centres (like Catherine suggested!) would look so spring like and blossomy..or a pink cake..very blossomy.

  6. Whatever you do will be a success Amanda. I like one of the other commenters ideas of a cake with the green coconut grass.
We had some women make pop poms and hang them in a tree at work for an art project - lots of bright colours and it looks fabulous - so that's my suggestion :)

  7. Oh gingham for sure & why not a couple of hay bails, you can use them for mulch on the garden afterwards but i tell you, toddlers & hay bails = tonnes of fun for the older siblings & they make great additional seating for picnic parties (especially if you're breastfeeding & need a seat!!) So cute, go for it, lots of folksy baking & keep it simple for the little fingers & . . . fussy parents!! Fruit platters are always a huge hit, plus tonnes of simple sandwiches. If you have seat cushions, pop them on the grass or ask everyone to bring a picnic rug, it will look like a patchwork floor covering outdoors. Can't believe she's almost one, phew, love Posie

  8. Wow!

    This will be ... divine!

I love party planning, & allowing your imagination to just run wild :)

As for the cake, I'd go something simple, & with a beautiful bunting at the top of it perhaps :)

I can't wait to see the end result! Happy planning,

  9. I love your ideas! With the bunting - you could make a little 'mini' bunting and prop it up on your cake, so cute. If you look on pinterest you will probably get too many ideas!! Im looking forward to seeing the outcome! Hope your having a great weekend! Cassie

  10. Catherine has good party ideas! I loved the recent tea party she did for her daughter. You've got great style with these things. I'm sure whatever you do, it will be just perfect. First birthdays are the best. I love watching little ones eat cake (often for the first time). xx

PS. I can't believe Sophie is one next month!

  16. This has got to be the simplest yet most wonderful idea amongst the 1st birthday party ideas I've seen. This might veer away from the usual magical, fantasy filled themes, but then again, this idea's too great to miss!

    1. Hi Anna, I actually pinned some identical baskets to those on my Pinterest moodboard for Sophie's party... had made a definite decision on them yet but seeing this link you've shared makes me think they're even cuter than I thought they were initially :)
