Entryway Changes

Happy Monday! Hope you’ve all had a lovely few days rest. While we were busy painting our living room wall over the weekend (well, while Paul was busy painting and I was keeping Grace out of his hair) it occurred to me that I hadn’t yet shared any photos on my blog of our front door and entryway which we re-painted a little while back for a fresh look.

Our old door was an ugly cream which looked horrible when left open inside. The wall straight ahead when you step foot into our house was a brown/purple shade which we were well and truly over. When we got our window frames resprayed last year in a charcoal grey (to rid all the horrible mission brown), we realised our front door and entryway needed some changes too. The first three photos below are the ‘before’ shots.

We painted the front door itself a crisp white, the door panels and frame outside charcoal grey (to match the windows) and the wall as you enter the house is now the same as all the other walls in our place.

Now I just need to work out a nice display arrangement for our hall table, find a cute inside mat and I’d like to make a little ‘welcome’ sign to hang on the brick wall next to our entrance. Any suggestions you would make?

  1. The external transformation is great! What a difference a crisp white door makes! It looks really good teamed with the blue too.

  2. Hi Amanda,
your front door is lovely and you have such a nice, spacious and welcoming hall. Why not make your own Welcome sign? (I can give you some instructions if you need any!). As for your hall table I would probably start with a nice big vase of flowers, a bowl for keys and loose change and a nice photoframe with a picture of Grace but your display will probably change with the seasons so just go with it!
    Have fun!

  5. Looks so lovely and inviting already, I can't wait to see what you do with the entry table! What a difference the paint has made to the door. Some baskets under the hall table would be nice - for shoes etc. I'm sure whatever you do it will be very stylish! Happy Monday

  8. It looks really great Amanda, so nice and fresh! I'd love to be able to paint my front door it is awful, they recently re-painted the building I live in white but left my front door! I always find hall table displays need to be slightly practical, i have a nice oval country road bowl that I put my keys in etc and potted plants are always good too. Oh and thank you so much for your lovely words about my photo's, it means a lot. It's funny I don't really style them, but I have been learning to use my camera on manual and I think it makes all the difference. I hope you have a lovely week xx

Oooh ideas for your hall table - an electic mix of vases and little bowls for keys, letters etc, some flowers or twigs or a collection of photo frames?

  13. What a difference it makes painting your front door Amanda! Great job! Your "old" feature wall colour in your entry looks very similar to my family room feature wall which we are about to change also. Your entry now looks so fresh and inviting! Hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather today! Christine xo

  15. Amanda - in answer to your question you only need to use freezer paper with fabric. For painting on wood I use a laminator pouch. If you open it up the inside is slightly rough and not slippery so doesn't move about on wood. I type out my word in my chosen font then lay the open laminator pouch down over the top of the paper and then cut through both to cut out the letters. Then I put the pouch bit on top of the wood and dry brush. Take your time and wipe off most of the paint to avoid bleeding around the edges of the letters.
Any more tips just let me know - good luck!

  16. The fresh, clean white doors look so much more refreshing and modern and classy. I love the heart motif in the glass. That is a really pretty touch.

Your home looks beautiful, Amanda. I love the painting of the two puppies kissing in your foyer. We have 2 big puppies they look a bit like those 2 characters.

Regarding eating 3 pieces of slice, you enjoy it - home cooking was always meant to be heartily enjoyed. Yum, I am sitting here with a cup of tea in hand thinking how nice a piece of slice would be! So curious - what type of slice did you bake? I have such a sweet tooth.

Have a beautiful week with your Grace and your Paul.

  17. Love it Amanda!! Reminds me we still need to fix up our entry ...... 3 years later and a wall removed we still need to finish some plastering, repaint the inside wall and get rid of the bright purple exterior of the door. Also interesting to hear you had your window frames re-sprayed. We also have a 1980's built house with those ugly brown window trims - I never knew you could get them re-sprayed!

  18. What an amazing home - you are making some amazing improvements! I'm in Perth also and would love to know who you used to respray your window frames - mine are also mission brown.

  22. A great improvement - I agree with the 'fresh and lovely' comments. Makes me think that 'feature' wall, painted a different color, may not be such a feature at all....oops, lots of homes in Perth have feature wall fever!

  24. A great improvement for sure Amanda. It looks fresh and inviting. I like the idea of some baskets under the table perhaps? They could hold magazines or shoes or whatever? Have fun!

  25. Thanks for all the encouraging comments everyone. I really appreciate your feedback and ideas.

Marie - we were really happy with the re-spraying of our window frames and used a company called 'Alucolour'. If you check out one of my old posts from Feb 09 'Homely One House Tour - The Patio' you can see the before and after shots of some of our frames. We were really happy with this company - they took out all the glass, masked everything up so carefully and then spray painted it. If you want me to chase up their phone number, just leave me another comment on this post and I will do so.

  26. Hi Amanda. Do you know what, I just realised you weren't on my 'follow' list. Duh? What had I been thinking? Anyway, I love your 'new' entrance. That initial cream was the creamiest-cream I had ever seen! The new white and charcoal scheme is to die for. I was trying to think of a few suggestions for you though I can't because I think it all looks so great as is!
