Vegetable Garden Progress

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. Today I thought I’d let you know how our little vegie patch we started about a month ago is going. I've included the photo above so you can get an idea where it's positioned in our yard (you can see it in the background if you look closely). We planted seedlings of cherry tomatoes, capsicums, baby carrots, spring onions, a whole bunch of different lettuces, baby spinach, red sorrel and strawberries. In some pots next to the planter, I’ve added another strawberry, rocket and tomato plant to balance things out with my herb pots on the other side and everything has been mulched with pea hay to help keep the moisture in.

All the seedlings are growing really well, especially the lettuces which we’ve already been able to use. There’s nothing better than being able to pop outside to pick a few fresh lettuce leaves to make a salad. I have noticed something is taking some bites out of the rocket and a few lettuce leaves though and a few white cabbage moths have been hanging around, so perhaps caterpillars are the culprits?

This part of our backyard is so much nicer now than the previous neglected corner it was. Also, we have stopped the problem of Asha running along the fence barking at the dogs next door and making a mess of grey sand everywhere. The remaining yellowish bush in between the herb corner and the vegie patch is really in the wrong spot, but it’s growing so well that I think I’ll just leave it where it is. We just need to neaten up the lawn and the edges around the planter and it will be perfect.

Here’s some photos of how this corner used to look and how things are looking now so far…

On a different note, I have to say I feel a real cloud of sadness in blogland here today with A-M’s latest news of her decision to take a break from blogging. Please stop by her blog and offer some words of support and encouragement for such a lovely lady who is going through a difficult time…

  1. The vegie patch is looking wonderful Amanda! How great for Grace to see everything growing too :)
When I read A-M's blog, I felt quite sad, but it is so lovely to see the blogging community leave such beautiful messages. Hopefully she will be back soon xx

  2. Hi Amanda, your vegie patch looks so good, very healthy! I think a few bites out of things are part of the deal..we've certainly had a few. I've read about a good coffee mixture for deterring snails and caterpillars, I'll send it to you if you'd like it. So sad about A-M, I feel a bit sick..Rachaelxx

  6. Amazing improvement. What paint is to furniture, a defined garden edge and mulch is to the garden. Different altogether! We've been growing herbs and vegies too, but mine are a bit all over the shop. Yours look so organised. xx

I read A-M's post and I was surprised to hear her news and worried for her too, I hope things will get better for her soon.

  11. It just looks so lush and healthy! I love the fact that it is raised as well - no chance of your doggy digging holes..... I've just planted watermelon vines (hopefully in time for Christmas.) Can't wait to see how you use the red sorrel? I'm sure our collective thoughts and prayers are all with A-M. If anyone has the strength to bounce back - it's her. Have a great week! ;)Sharyne

  12. Your patch is looking great AManda. I agree, it's great to be able to eat out of your own yard, sometimes though I find I sit out in my patch and eat - the peas never make it into the kitchen!
I'd love the coffee idea as well if you'd be able to post or email it to me please?
Very sad about A-M. I just hope she's ok

  14. Hi, Amanda! I love your veggie patch! With the little garden there, your yard looks so nice!!! I wish I could get myself motivated to have a veggie patch like you. It's hard enough to raise two kids that I can't think of other things to raise. I will definitely pay a visit to AM's blog. You're such a sweet friend. I'm glad you had a lovely weekend. Mine was okay. My hubby worked both days and I was not feeling great, but I did enjoy spending some time with my crazy kids. :) Have a great week! Thanks also for your sweet comments. They made my day!

  15. Hi Amanda. Your vege patch looks great. How are you going with snails and slugs? Im at war with them at the moment!!

  16. Renee - to bed honest, I haven't noticed many snails hanging around the vegies - I don't think we've had enough rain here for them.

  18. It looks so great, so many different things in there too which is nice. There's nothing better than a salad made of greens right from the garden, it looks like you've done a lot of work to that area. Hope you had a lovely weekend, and sad about AM.
