Family Friendly Living Room

It has been such bliss sitting in front of our 'fireplace' the last few nights. It really does create a warm and cosy ambience and heats up our living area beautifully. As part of our living room mini-makeover, I want to make the space a bit more ‘family friendly’ and a lot lighter and brighter. Down the track, we’ll look at getting some white in-built cabinets and shelves on either side of our new heater which will really lift this whole space but for now, we’re going to focus on the following smaller changes…

  • get rid of the feature wall and re-paint the same as the other walls
  • replace the dark grey rug with something lighter to contrast with the sofas and make some big floor cushions to provide a comfier play space for Grace
  • add a few little pops of colour in the form of cushions and accessories
  • remove the chunky coffee table so Grace has more room to play (one day we will get a less obtrusive one)
  • replace canvas above fireplace with something else (possibly a family portrait)

Before I had Grace, I always thought I’d keep the kiddie clutter to a minimum. I now realise this is difficult to achieve and I actually want bits and pieces around our home to make it more ‘family friendly’, afterall, it is a place for all of us to enjoy. As Grace gets older, I’d like a little wooden table and chairs or toy kitchen around, little reminders that there are children in our house.

Here are a few images I found in my inspiration folder that hint at being family homes…

  3. I have to say, I like cosier homes to really heavily designed ones. Most of the ones I see in magazines don't look as though people live in them! I like the sounds of your plans - your house will be super cosy in no time :)

  4. Great post and you are right, its hard to balance and decide how you are going to accomodate toys and playing "equipment"...Luckily we have 2 seperate living areas so toys are in 1 and the other is purely for visitors and adult time.....
Must be a recessive gene from my Italian grandparents and not being able to go into their "gooda room" unless their is a wedding on.
    Have a nice weekend.

  5. Sarah - yes, gorgeous hallway but not mine I'm sorry. It's from the Home Beautiful website. You should definitely get a puppy though, your little one would love one I'm sure.

  6. So glad to hear you are enjoying the new fireplace! I love the plans you've got for your family room, those little touches will really finish it off. It's amazing what a new rug, some cushions and a lick of paint can do to a room! I know what you mean about kiddie clutter all too well! When Amy was Grace's age we had one basket of toys. As soon as they are walking it seems there are so many other things they need and all of a sudden you have a kitchen, little ride-ons, baby doll strollers etc!! It's lovely though because then you realise that you have kids and your life has taken a whole new direction!! I say embrace it and enjoy it because they grow up sooooo fast! I miss the little kitchen and being fed so many yummy delights!! Ahhh, memories.....
    Have a great weekend :)

  11. I love how these kids spaces have been integrated, it's nice to give them their own little place so that everyone can do their thing together. Before I had kids I swore I would have special hidden places for kids stuff so it didn't take over the house, but I really like it now, it's nice to have a little reminder of them :)

That fire place is fantastic, Amanda, it looks so lovely and cosy! Just in time to catch the end of winter too. Hopefully these beautiful sunny days hang about though!

    Have a great weekend :)

  12. I know what you mean Amanda. I used to think 'er, I don't want kiddy crap all over MY house' but your attitude changes doesn't it. I love those inspiring pics you posted. I can't wait to see your fmaily room make over! I'm so glad you're enjoying your fireplace, we are currently sitting on top of our oil heater :)
Have a lovely evening my dear!

  13. I so wish we had a fireplace. I know your probably thinking we don't need one here in Brisbane, but it is at the top of my wish list for the next house - they are so beautiful! Love the images in your post, especially the last one with its touch of retro! Can't wait to see the changes. Have a great weekend. Michelle

  17. Gorgeous images Amanda..It is hard to stop the spread of toys! The girls have their own drawer and cupboard for drawing and painting things in our family room and I often put down a rug for them with a box of whatever they're playing with. It's easy to pack up at the end of the day. Look forward to seeing how your family room evolves. I look forward to seeing mine evolve too! It seems to be last on the list at the moment..Rachaelxx

  18. I love the idea of bringing your family life into the way you design your home. Try to get a copy of Anita Kaushal's book "Home"

  19. It is hard to balancce kids and the home - I have tried to set two areas with kids stuff - one for 'home' activities (playing dolls, cooking etc) and the other for crafty stuff.
This way they can come and go in these areas and use their stuff without me wanting it packed away at mealtimes and the like.
