Our 'Chipped Tooth' Toddler

I was slightly devastated last night.  Earlier in the day, in an attempt to get her little sister into the swing, Grace pushed the seat into Sophie and knocked her flat on her face.  It wasn’t until bedtime however as I was tucking her into her sleep suit, that I noticed a tiny corner of one of her front teeth had been chipped.  Yes I know it was a minor incident, that she could have sustained a far more serious injury, that it’s only her baby tooth and that the same thing could have happened anyway as she toddled around on the patio.  It’s just that she had such a perfect little set of front teeth.  Sure, she had a small gap between those two toothy pegs, but they lined up beautifully.  The chip is barely noticeable to anyone else, it's just I can’t help but feel a bit of mama guilt that I should have been more vigilant, checking to see if Grace had closed the back door after she’d gone out to play… hindsight can be cruel.

In happier events, after weeks of teasing us with steps and standing, Sophie is now officially walking - on her own terms when it suits her, but a definite milestone to write down in her baby book under 13 months, the same age Grace was when she took her first steps…yet another sign that our baby has blossomed into a little girl.

Have a lovely start to the week everyone…

  1. Oh no poor little Sophie I can understand how you must feel seeing her chipped little tooth. Don't feel guilty though sometimes things just happen and she is ok and that's what's important:) Sometimes even being at your most vigilant things still happen. My oldest fell out of her bed when she was little, I think she may have even had a bed rail and bumped her tooth turning it grey. The adult tooth was ok thankfully but it is a little memory we will always keep about her. Yeah Sophie, that is such and exciting moment. Have a wonderful week Amanda. xx

    1. That's what I keep telling myself, as I realise with her teetering around now, the same thing could happen if she fell and bumped her tooth...

  2. Please don't play the "what if.." game...you'll never sleep!! I don't think there's a toddler around who hasn't had more falls than you can count - even if helicoptered 24/7!!
Walking is such a lovely milestone - they start to look so much older so quickly when they're upright!

    1. I know you're right Ally and I know this sort of thing happens when little ones start walking. I remember the bumps and bruises Grace had at the same age :)

  3. Oh dear I feel your pain. I bumped my daughter against a railing when she was a baby and she has a tiny scar near her eye. I feel so awful every time I see it.

  4. I know exactly how you feel! My two have given me some awfully scary moments over the last 2 years! They pick themselves up and go forward again though...i think we adults can take a lesson from that resiliance!

  5. Oh Amanda there will be many more accidents to come yet...Bec is the most accident prone child I know and she's 4 now and a danger to herself.....as long as they're not hurt badly all will be fine and Ally is right you can't watch them 24/7 so don't blame yourself at all it's just one of those things....As for sophie walking that's fantastic...she'll be running before you know it...xo

I've been thinking and feeling so much about growth and milestones. I'm struggling with it so much this time round.

  7. congratulations to sophie on her first steps! now you can bring out all those beautiful little dresses that won't get all caught up and dirty under crawling knees!

i must apologise to you because after you left the comment on my blog i only then logged into olive's email to check and there was not one, but two lovely messages from you! i feel terrible that i had not realised that they were there. and even then, i haven't responded. i'm feeling quite overwhelmed with trying to unpack and settle in and spend time with olive...that i never get a chance to do something as simple (it seems simple!) as respond to your email. BUT I WILL. i promise!

  8. Oh...I know too well the 'chipped tooth' saga :) It only shows in some photos, but when you see Ella face-to-face, she has a MASSIVE chip out of her front tooth. Not from the bottom of the tooth, but out of the actual tooth surface!! It's huge and noticeable! She fell on the playground when she was 2 and had blue paint from the metal playground wedged in the chip for MONTHS!!!!! So, she had a blue tooth....NOICE! I was devastated :( The dentist said there's nothing they can do for baby teeth. Eventually the blue fell out but left a gaping chip which over time has become bigger and more noticable. Thank god it's just a baby tooth and it'll fall out soon.
But I know the guilt and blame and annoyance that comes with it Amanda :)

YAY....Go Soph on the walking!!!! I love their wide legged, wobbly first steps :)))
Ryder started walking about 3 weeks ago :) No stopping him now....he's on the move...EVERYWHERE :))))

Will email you once we're back home!

  9. Our no.2 boy knocked his front tooth when he was young, the nerve died and his tooth turned a shade of grey. You only start to notice how common teeth injuries are when it happens to your child. Better to happen to a baby tooth.
